What if i swallow a plum pit

Well, apple seeds can indeed be poisonous, but it takes quite a few of them to kill you and only if they have been crushed. The seeds contain amygdalin, which is a glycoside that can release cyanide.

One would have to eat a lot of seeds to ever get cyanide poisoning by this route. A plum is a type of stone fruit that carries its seed inside a pit in the core of the fruit.

These contain a cyanide and sugar compound known as amygdalin. When metabolized it breaks down into hydrogen cyanide HCN. In all cases the toxin is inside the seeds and will not be exposed to the body unless the seeds are chewed. Believe it or, that big seed in the middle of the mango fruit is edible, with one caveat: go green. If you've eaten a ripe mango, you know that the seed seems impenetrably hard and fibrous.

They are often also bitter. When animals ingest plums with pits it passes through the digestive system without any damage and animals can drop them anywhere. Humans can also pass them without causing any damage. The plum seed contains cyanide, 10g of the plum pit may have 9 mg of cyanide. Ingesting the whole seed is not toxic as it remains intact, and the body does not absorb cyanide from the whole seed. The plum stone contains amygdalin when ingested breakdown into the hydrogen cyanide which harms the child body.

If the kernel falls into the larynx and trachea it can cause suffocation that leads to the death of a child. So if your child swallows the pits then you should contact your doctor. If your baby swallows the plum pits and it falls into the trachea he or she may have a heavy cough and may face difficulty in breathing or the baby will not be able to breathe. If the pits reach the intestine there are no visual symptoms, you may find it in the stool. If the pits are stuck into the oesophagus your baby may not be able to eat anything and feel pain and discomfort in the abdomen.

In this case, you can see blood clots in the stool. Instead, just watch the stool to ensure that pits come out and then calm down. But if you see these symptoms like abdomen discomfort, pain, vomiting, nausea and blood in stool several times you should consult your doctor for treatment.

Or is cyanide in fruit pits just a myth? The seeds also known as stones, pits, or kernels of stone fruits like apricots, cherries, plums, and peaches do contain a compound called amygdalin, which breaks down into hydrogen cyanide when ingested. And, yes, hydrogen cyanide is definitely a poison.

That said, if you've accidentally swallowed a few seeds, you can relax. Seeds and pits should never be crushed or placed in a blender for consumption. Not everyone abides by that policy though.

It was only when I tore the second prune in half because it was bigger than the first one I gave him and I was worried it might be a choking hazard - how ironic is that! I thought it took him a long time to swallow the first one! Anyway for those that found this site like I did while gripped with panic, it may help you to know that the stone appeared in his nappy 36 hours later with no problems Does anyone know how bad it hurts for a baby to pass the pit????

I know, what a horrible thing to ask, but I know you moms understand my fear. My 15 month old just swallowed a plum pit.

While I am totally relieved to come across this blog, I am worried about the passing. Is it painful for the baby??? I'm glad to see that this happens to a lot of people. My son today swallowed a plum pit I don't know about a plum pit, but my friend's son had a coin lodged in his chest. I imagine the same thing could happen to a plum pit. So it's important to monitor the child and make sure it does come out! Just did a google search for daughter swallowed a plum pit Yes,I know Glad to hear it will pass, probably going to go to bed wondering if we'll make a trip to the emergency room tonight, but praying that this whole thing will pass soon Oh my!

I was hoping that I wasn't alone in this concerning experience My 4 year old daughter was eating a sugar plum and accidently swallowed the pit. The look of horror and shock on her face was pitiful, and my wild imaginations, enough to send me searching!

Thank you SO much for writing about this, now anxious mother's can find peace of mind! I'm am suspicious that my 14mo has swallowed a rather large plum pit. It was slippery with the flesh of the plum so i think thats what aides in little ones swallowing them. Good to know he should just pass it ouch! Came home to get a guilty confession from Daddy about Baby's first plum experience. He was so proud to tell me how the little guy just lllloovved plums.

In fact he even ate the one I had spit out earlier before heading out the door. It had tasted so sour to me. Problem was, he sheepishly admitted, he turned around to find the whole thing gone.

What now? Well thanks to everyone here, we'll sleep okay tonight and keep our eyes on the nappy;. My 2 year old just today swallowed a plum pit and I totally panicked and called the doc. She said it would most likely come out the other end that this happens a lot and she hasn't heard of one that hasn't come out yet.

I will certainly try : but it's tough. My 3 year old granddaughter just ate the whole plum, pit and all, she never swallows seeds or pits, till today! I'll still keep an eye on her, but this post sure helped get rid of some of the panic! Oh funny! My husband just decided to mention that our 16 mth old daughter ate an entireplum this everning Good to know I don't have to worry too much.

Will be keeping an eye on her for the nxt few days There are lots of posts from 'plum pit victims' just after the offending event - but not many from people that have spotted the plum pit as it has exited the body the other end!

I'm presuming all these stories had happy endings and the pits did, indeed, pass???!!! What a cute story! I've also stumbled upon your blog, thanks to Google, because I've also swallowed a plum pit in fact, it's been 10 minutes or so The only difference is that I'm 18, which means that I should've learned long ago to be more cautious with plum pits I must say, this post made my day!

Thank you!!! Im truly grateful for this post, my 15 month old son had a plum pip today and l was rather worried, until l googled it and found your blog. Now l can get some sleep.

Swallowing plum pips are quite common l see. You people have it easy, my three year old just devoured 25 cherry plums that where sitting in a bowl, I am worried! My 3 year old son just ate 3 plums, pit and all. I don't feel so bad now! One more: my 13 months baby ate 2 plum pits. I am less worried now. So I make stewed prunes every now and then, and decided today I'll make some, and I've had a bad experience with Sunsweet pitted prunes so now I buy Sunsweet prunes with pits because its easier to pull it out rather than swallow the occasional fragmented pit which I once choked on.

So without thinking I pop a stewed prune in my mouth with the intention to eat around it and remove the pit after ward which I always do,except today I swallow the whole thing and my first thought was to make myself throw it up but if I got caught in my throat I'd choke, so I type in "what to do if I swallow a prune pit" to Google and this blog appeared!

Thank goodness, I will just let it pass now, and to speed that process up I consumed another 2 prunes and made sure I removed the entire pit!!!! Cheeky Monkey.. Not worried now but will check closely to make sure it passes. It was only small. Ah, landed on your blog after googling, "My toddler swallowed a plum pit". I, of course, freaked out. My husband is a doctor and was very reassuring that it will come out, but I had to google! Your blog made me feel a lot better.

Waiting for it to come out now Thanks for this post, I was a little freaked out when I gave my 16mo a whole plum. I only turned around for 2 minutes, ok maybe 5, but the whole thing was gone! Nowhere to be found I can only assume he ate the entire thing. Now I feel much better about the whole thing, especially since I am certainly not the only one to have this happen ;. My 4 years old swallowed a plum pit too.

It was about about half an inch in diameter, but had a fairly pointy edge I quickly pitted another plum to find out after realizing he had ate the complete plum. First doctor I called told me to not take any any chances and go to the emergency room to have it checked out At the ER, they put my son in P4 out of 5 priority levels, almost the lowest. After 2 hours waiting, I manage to get appointment with another doctor in a clinic. So I come back to let you know that yes, it did pass, the following morning 18hrs after eating it.

Just be careful of any inconvenience while waiting for it to pass. Any bleeding or stomach ache or loss of appetite should trigger to go to the ER immediately, otherwise it will pass! The plum pit swallowing continues The same scenario just played out in my kitchen with my 2 year old. Here's to hoping things come out smoothly and thank goodness for BTDT moms! My 15 month old son also swalloved a plum pit yesterday.

Mum from Europe. I too just swallowed a whole plum pit and I'm no baby!
