Perhaps it's the fact that that Michael Bay trailer made The Run look more cinematically exciting than it could hope to be. And it's certainly not helping things that in the demos I've seen, the non-driving action sequences look gimmicky and loaded with quicktime events.

I suppose all of those things contribute to my skepticism. There is a great idea at the core of Need For Speed: The Run , but it's an idea that I fear the game itself won't realize particularly well.

Driving first of all feels just awful, no matter which car you drive they all feel like boats on 4 wheels with abysmal handling.

Also pretty much all cars sound like vacuum cleaners. Idea of panUSA race is a great one, but poorly executed. Racer AI is insanely rubber banded and scripted not letting you pull ahead if youre a good driver. Need For Speed: The Run looks absolutely stupendous — graphically, it's possibly the best-looking racing game ever, with incredibly lifelike landscapes stretching into the distance and gloriously crisp cars and cut-scenes.

The cars in The Run handle like they should — that is, fast, responsive and tail-happy, ever-keen to drift around corners.

The single-player game's premise is good, too. Jack's odyssey is split into nine legs, each itself split into stages. You're allowed five "resets" on each stage, which are triggered when you crash out or are busted by the police — or you can trigger them yourself, essentially committing suicide if you feel you're not going to be able to meet that stage's objective without rewinding to the last checkpoint. It's never good having to reset yourself in a game, and Need For Speed: The Run soon adds a whole host of instances of poor game design.
