Why do we have chapel

I love chapel, and I honestly think it is one of my favourite parts of the day because it grounds me in the ways of Jesus every day. Like I said, doing chapel for me has not led to instant success in my faith. Instead, it has been like a slow spiritual transformation. This is special because it has become a daily activity that allows me to devote time to grow in my faith in Jesus. More specifically, this is done through prayer, worship, teaching, and fellowship with other believers.

I think it is safe to say that there has been a similar result with many other Briercrest students regarding going to chapel, but you can hear it from their words instead of mine:. The coolest part about what students at Briercrest say about chapel is that it is so special to them. Even after all these other schools have stopped compulsory chapels, Briercrest is still doing daily chapel. I have reason to believe this is because of the profound transformation that has taken place in many lives who have entered the grounds of this school.

To neglect meeting together daily simply means failing to encourage one another to grow deeper in our faith. Chapel is just too special to ditch. There is a special significance that chapel has for not only our students but for everyone around the students as well.

I am in my third year now, and I am blessed to say that chapel at Briercrest has personally affected my life for the better. I honestly can't believe how much this has spiritually formed me closer to Jesus. In my own experience, Briercrest's community can be a vital part of growing in your faith.

From dorm life, daily chapel, Christian professors, and more, us students have opportunities to be discipled and disciple others every day here. To see anyone perhaps draw a step closer to Jesus is the most beautiful thing to me, and I believe this could happen for you at Briercrest.

Elective Chapels are not mandatory, but offer students another option for Chapel credit. Each Elective Chapel you attend counts as one Chapel credit. Why do we gather together for chapel? Why do we do it three times every week? Why did I have to eat chard? Why did I have to take a shower? Why did I have to learn algebra?

It turns out they were right. I would have benefited from some overarching meta-narrative that would have had me running to eat chard in the shower.

So, why do we get together for chapel as a community? Good questions. The journey itself is intended to be communal. Encountering fellow sojourners will do more to shape our experience of the love of God than anything else.

They will challenge us, sharpen us, annoy us, stretch us, expose us, encourage us, pick us up, and compel us to keep going. So we gather together. Likewise we have voluntarily chosen as a community to come together and devote ourselves to scriptural teaching, which is meant to introduce us to the incredible love of God in Christ, and inspire us to pursue living in such a way that he will be first in all things and in all ways.

We are frail creatures often duped by our idols and our own selves. Scripture has a way of connecting us to the bigger story of God, and putting things in their right place. Unless you are tweeting your favorite quote or taking notes, putting away your phone is probably the best course of action. Show respect to the speaker. It is actually not about you More about this later, but daily chapel just like church should be about Jesus. Think of it this way—you are getting to hear distinguished speakers, pastors, faculty, without having to pay an entrance fee.

Imagine what it would cost for you to attend a secular university, and also to pay to go to religious conferences and presentations every week. Daily chapel presents you with this experience as a convenient, integral part of your day.

It is a time to be united with your peers The amazing thing about community on a Christian university campus is that you and your peers and the faculty and staff all share a common bond in Christ. Imagine worshiping Him together every day. It tears down walls of petty differences and celebrates the salvation that you share in, by grace. What could possibly be more joy-filled than that? It is about Jesus As mentioned earlier, even though chapel is an amazing opportunity for your own personal spiritual growth, if you remain internally focused, you will not find it fulfilling forever.

The primary purpose of chapel is worship. In chapel, we come together three times a week as a community of Christians to affirm our faith, to be encouraged in the Christian life, to focus our attention on God's agenda, to pray for ourselves and the world, and to give praise and thanksgiving to our triune God.

Since it is the only time that the entire student body gathers in one place, chapel becomes an opportunity to build community. The Chapel program seeks to nurture the spiritual life of students in the context of an academic environment. Our office seeks to fulfill its mission of giving leadership to the meeting of the spiritual needs and furthering the spiritual formation of Wheaton students, staff, and faculty in a multitude of ways, one of which is through corporate worship in Chapel.

Our chapel curriculum this year will be Ephesians on Mondays, a reading from the gospel of John on Wednesdays, and a Psalm on Fridays.
