Which boxer retired in 2004

The Englishman initially retired in , following devastating loss to Manny Pacquiao. However, he returned 3 years later in to fight Vyacheslav Senchenko.

Despite still possessing the talent, he lost and retired soon after. Jim Jefferies was one of the first-ever boxers to come out of retirement. The American called it quits in , only to return in to face Jack Johnson. This was a move influenced by society, but it did not go well as Jefferies suffered an embarrassing loss.

One such is Evander Holyfield. The former Heavyweight World Champion initially retired in However, he came back and left a greater mark in the sport. His most famous fight against Mike Tyson was after his comeback. I learnt on this trip that if you lose that doesn't mean that's the end of your boxing career.

But because of the way I lost, I thought 'get up and brush myself off and get at them'. Lewis won the Olympic super-heavyweight title for Canada in Seoul in , but returned to Britain, where he was born, to turn pro.

He won 41 of his 44 pro fights, with two defeats to Oliver McCall and Hasim Rahman - both of which he later avenged - and a contentious draw against Evander Holyfield in Lewis first won the WBC title by default in , when Riddick Bowe put his belt in the bin, but was then beaten unexpectedly by McCall at Wembley in He regained the title against McCall three years later before unifying the world titles by beating Holyfield at the second attempt in , after the first bout had ended rancorously and with Lewis insisting he was robbed.

That was not the end of the learning curve, however: Lewis and the boxing world were stunned by a massive right-hander from Rahman in April , before he regained his titles with a comprehensive demolition of Rahman seven months later.

Lewis was adamant that he would not be changing his mind. He could cross his arms like George Foreman but he was also well schooled in the traditional type of defense you get taught in the amateurs.

Evander presented a real challenge and I had to put in a lot of effort to break through. Fans may expect me to say McCall or Hasim Rahman for punching power but I basically set myself up against both of them. He was able to close the gap very quickly and that allowed him to get off the big punches.

Mavrovic moved well but he was in survival mode from the moment the fight started. Everyone said that I should have fought him again but he was just icing on my retirement cake. I beat him at my worst so there was no need for a rematch. He definitely experienced the uppercuts. Check your inbox or spam folder to confirm your subscription.
